European School Milk Programme
In the face of growing childhood obesity, the European School Milk Programme encourages children to consume dairy products, maintain a balanced diet and to actively think about what they eat and drink. As you are involved with youth, you play a vital role in shaping children's health habits that will last them a lifetime.
The EU School Milk programme takes on a strong educational role by supporting the development of good eating and nutritional habits for children at an early age. Through this programme, not only does the European Union provide subsidies to schools and other educational establishments so that they can provide their students with selected milk and milk products, it also organises activities intended to increase awareness about healthy nutrition among youth all over Europe.
One such activity is the "Milk Power!" photo competition encouraging youth to creatively think about milk and dairy products in their everyday lives. All pupils under 20 years of age can take a picture and enter it on the campaign website, www.drinkitup.eu, by May 31st. Winners are chosen through online voting that is open to the public, and the top three photos will win Nintendo Wii's.
Want to get involved?
It's easy to take part in this campaign! Just go to the electronic toolbox found on the website www.drinkitup.eu and take one of these simple actions:
1. Upload an electronic banner onto your website, blog or internet platform.
2. Print and post the posters in your school, community center, office or house.
3. Tell all the young people you know about the "Milk Power!" photo competition and encourage them to enter. Or even better, organise an afternoon activity where you can discuss nutrition and then have everyone take their own photo to submit to the competition.
4. Print the timetables and use them in your classroom or with your youth group (a great reminder to not only stay organised, but to drink their daily glass of milk!)
Tell us what you're doing and send us photos or links and we will post them on our Myspace and Facebook pages!
Check out the "Milk Power!" video and pass it on to your friends. Spread the word!
