Further information

This EFAD-led initiative set out to assess the needs of European dietitians in addressing Household Food Insecurity (HFI) and to create targeted resources that support their professional response to this growing challenge.

The project was carried out in two main stages.
In Stage 1, a mixed-methods research approach was used to gain insights into dietitians’ knowledge, beliefs, and practices around HFI. This included an online survey (WP1) followed by a series of focus groups (WP2). Using the COM-B behavioural framework, the research identified key barriers and enablers dietitians face when screening for and responding to HFI in their daily practice.

In Stage 2, the findings were translated into practical tools. EFAD developed a collection of evidence-based resources (WP3), which were made available through a new Education Hub hosted within EFAD’s Learning Library. To support engagement and learning, a live online event (WP4) was also held, offering interactive sessions with subject matter experts to introduce the Hub’s content.

The ultimate goal of this project was to strengthen the capacity of European dietitians to identify, understand, and effectively respond to food insecurity across diverse practice settings.
