As the use of incretin-based therapies (IBTs), including GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GLP-1/GIP agonists, continues to expand in obesity treatment, the consensus statement provides practical, evidence-informed recommendations to support healthcare professionals in delivering comprehensive, person-centred care.
The publication highlights the essential role of dietitians within multidisciplinary obesity care teams and emphasises that medical nutrition therapy should remain a cornerstone of treatment alongside pharmacological interventions.
The consensus recommendations focus on:
- Delivering evidence-based medical nutrition therapy throughout treatment with incretin-based therapies.
- Preserving lean body mass and physical function through adequate protein intake and resistance exercise.
- Monitoring and managing gastrointestinal side effects while preventing nutritional deficiencies.
- Supporting long-term behaviour change and psychological wellbeing.
- Ensuring equitable access to multidisciplinary, person-centred obesity care.
The consensus statement was presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) 2026 by lead author Dr Laurence Dobbie and second author Liisa Tolvanen, member of the EFAD ESDN Obesity Committee, on behalf of an international panel of 26 experts.
This collaboration reflects EFAD’s ongoing commitment to advancing evidence-based obesity care and reinforcing the vital contribution of dietitians in improving health outcomes for people living with obesity.
